The Essential Lingerie Guide For Men

Buying underwear for the lady in their life is a scary proposition for most men. Getting married and saying 'I do' comes with about the same amount of fear as wandering round the lingerie section at your local department store trying to work out what a cup is, and what the difference between a demi bra and a triangle bra is. On the one hand there's the worry that you'll buy something that either will be the wrong size (will she be offended if you thought she was bigger, or smaller, than she is?) or that you'll buy something totally inappropriate, and of course the nagging worry that people will think you're merely staring as a result of some kind of strange fetish you happen to have.

The first thing to do when it comes to choosing lingerie for her is to start at home with what she already has. Have a hunt through her underwear drawer and find her favourite sets. Have a look at them and try to note down the sizes of both the bra and the knickers. Wherever possible it is best to spend a few extra pounds and get a set rather than just one or the other. Women seem to prefer matching sets, so just go with it. Check out features of her favorites, such as colors and styles. Check if it is under wired or not. You can tell this because an under wired bra has a thick wire running through the lower seam under each cup. If the whole thing is flexible, then it isn't under wired.

When you reach the shop, don't be afraid to touch. Many men have an embarrassed look at the sizes and colours, grab the first one that seems right and make a rapid dash for the till. However, remember that this material is going to be worn close against sensitive areas of her body for a long time, (or as long as you let her of course!), so it needs to be comfortable. Is it soft and comfortable? Is it under wired, and if so, does that feel well padded?

One thing to bear in mind is that there is often a world of difference between what men like to imagine their lady wearing, and what women actually like wearing. When choosing underwear, try to aim more for a classic look rather than something more likely to be worn by someone on a dodgy adult video. Try to avoid unnecessary lace and frills, and see-through material is unlikely to be met with as much enthusiasm as you would like to pretend. Similarly, open crotch and things are not the wisest choice.

Something for the more adventurous male to try, and which is likely to be met with more enthusiasm, is to look at the alternatives to the traditional knickers and bra sets. Camisole sets, corsets and babydolls are all types of underwear which are classic, very romantic and effectively combine kickers and bra into one look. The same rules apply however, and you would be wise to avoid buying something more likely to make her look cheap than classy.

One final world of advice: always keep the receipt. If all else fails and it has to go back, why not take her with you and let her help you? It will make choosing underwear on your own in future a little easier, and she'll be only too happy to offer you advice and tell you her preferences.

Do Male Pheromones Affect The Way Women Feel?

In addition to investigating the effect that male pheromones have on women's hormones and their brain activity, researchers have also studied whether pheromones affect women's moods and perceptions.

The primary difficulty in evaluating the impact of male pheromones on emotions and perceptions of women is that these factors are subjective. That is to say, unlike hormone levels and brain activity as measured by sophisticated scanning techniques, they can't be objectively measured.

Another difficulty in this type of study is that they tend to use extracts from the underarms of men. They include a number of substances that are believed to function as pheromones: androstadienone or AND, androstenol, and androstenone. As you'll see below, these substances seem to have conflicting or opposite effects on women's perceptions, making it difficult to attribute a response to any one male pheromone.

In one of the earliest studies of the effect of male pheromones on women's moods, samples from the underarms of men were applied to the upper lips of women. The men had refrained from using deodorant for four weeks, presumably because the antibacterial properties of deodorant can inhibit the conversion of secretions from the apocrine glands in the underarm into the pheromones androstenol and androstenone.

(While application to the upper lip might sound like a bizarre ritual, it mimics the circumstances under which pheromones transfer from men to women. An extended period of contact is usually involved-and the women wore the pheromones on their upper lips for six hours. The application directly under their nostrils also ensured that their brains received a continual stream of chemical messages. Finally, pheromones often transfer from men to women via direct skin contact, through shaking hands, hugging, or even a casual kiss of greeting.)

The women were unaware that the substance they were testing was male pheromones; they believed it was a household product that was being readied for the market. In any event, they were asked to rate their moods during a six-hour period. The women reported feeling calmer and more relaxed.

A similar study applied androstadienone to the upper lips and necks of women and gave them a series of psychological tests that lasted for two hours. The tests were tedious, and women who received androstadienone maintained their initially positive mood far longer than did women who received an inert control substance.

In another study, both men and women wore masks to which androstenol had been applied. They then rated photographs of strangers. Women represented in photographs were perceived to be more attractive, sexier, and friendlier than when rated by people who were not exposed to androstenol. The men pictured were perceived to be more warm and approachable.

The same methodology applied to another substance that's part of underarm secretions-androstenone-revealed that women rated their own mood as less sexy while evaluating pictures of men.

Do pheromone-influenced perceptions results in more sexual activity?

The only study that seems to document this connection found that men who used a male pheromone product for six weeks experienced more sexual behavior involving a female partner than did men who didn't use the product. Objections to this study include the fact that the chemical formulation of the pheromone product-and even what male pheromones it contained-was not disclosed. The results of this study have not been duplicated elsewhere.

Choosing Designer Lingerie - A Man's Guide

We all know women love designer lingerie but if your a guy buying for that special lady sometimes selecting the right item can be harder than you think.
At Ansiti Lingerie we specialise in advising both men and women on how to select lingerie that fits well and looks great. Here's some advice for guys looking to buy something special.

To begin with make sure you know your hosiery from your basques.
Hoisery is generally thought of as coverings for legs and feet and is sometimes reffered to as legwear. Hosiery comes in many forms but is generally tights, hold-ups, stockings and socks. Remeber if its stockings you are buying you may also need to buy a suspender belt. If it is a basque you are looking for then it is a garment worn that may cover the midsection and have a built in bra.

Do you know the bra and briefs size for the lucky lady you wish to treat? If not, don't give up just yet. You can always have a sneaky peak through her underwear drawer and check her sizes. Check the size of a bra that she wears quite often . A bra size will always be a number and a letter eg. 34C. Also check for the size of the knickers. If you have no chance of checking her undies drawer you can ask her friends, mum or daughter. They may not know but they will be able to find out more discreetly than you! If there is no way of finding out what size she is then don't give up there.

You can always buy her some nightwear or hosiery. These often come in dress size (eg. Size 10) or Small, Medium and Large. See a size guide for help with these sizes.

What should you choose?

Choose something that you think she will like but also something you like as well. Think about what sort of styles she likes. Does she wear a padded bra or underwired bras. Does she wear thongs, briefs or shorts? Try and buy her something that she would not necessarily buy for herself.

Black and red are classics but purples and pinks are also a popular alternative. Silk lingerie also makes a special treat. The whole package is important so treat her to the bra and knickers and also any other matching items that may be available such as camisoles or suspender belts and stockings. Also think about camisoles, baby dolls and corsets.

Still struggling?

- If you are really not sure why not ask for a wish list or buy gift vouchers.

Help is at hand

If you are struggling please feel free to e-mail or call Ansiti for advice. Here at Ansiti we are always available and happy to help with all your designer lingerie needs.

The Evolution Of Lingerie

Today's lingerie plays a double role: functional and seductive.

It's during the Renaissance (around the 14th century) that women started wearing what we currently refer to as panties, and more generally, lingerie. But only at the end of the following century did the word underwear actually replace that of "body linen"; in turn, underwear is now considered "plain", the seductive moniker being "lingerie".

It was only a matter of time before lingerie entered the wardrobe as a clothing item in and of itself, therefore carrying its own social meaning. It asserted a more and more liberated behavior, a healthier relationship with one's body, a way to nonchalantly display what formerly very intimate. This was a new role for underwear.

As years went by, elegance was replaced with seduction, which has, in turn, been replaced with a sensuality that shows itself with no taboo whatsoever. Lingerie is a flagship product of the fashion industry, and as such it boasts a number of attributes desired by every woman: seduction, embellishment, imagination, pleasure, well-being and beauty.

As previously mentioned, today's lingerie plays a double role: functional and seductive. By the end of the 90's, the obsession was discretion. Showing a panty line or, to a lesser extent, the outline of a bra, was out of the question. Thus Lycra was introduced, bringing its elasticity to the plate, allowing for increased seamlessness. On the seduction side, lingerie goes the opposite direction and displays itself to the world forgoing the intimate in favor of the blatant.

Women tend to belong to one of two categories: the ones that like lace, embroidered fabrics, sensitive to the sexy, seductive aspect of lingerie, and the ones that only care for absolute discretion under the skin-tight clothes, with no regard for the fabric itself. Nevertheless, the the jury is out as to whether a thong or g-string should be shown or not. Although certain people consider it to be vulgar, it is unanimously recognized that it has an undeniable aesthetic effect that brings out the curves and guarantees the absence of panty lines. It's probably a moot point, because when a woman is wearing a thong, it's obvious. Not necessarily because she shows it, but merely because the absence of panty lines pretty much underlines it (no pun intended).

Today, lingerie companies like Frederick's of Hollywood and Victoria's Secret have annual modeling shows and national commercials to promote their lingerie. Society has changed from hiding what we have on underneath to showing it off.

Swimwear: Evolution And Changing Trends

The history of swim wear - be it menswear or women’s wear - makes fascinating study. Women's swim wears have always been a heated topic in the fashion industry and there has been several changes in women’s swim wear according to the trends of the passing eras. Women's swim wears were initially introduced with the purpose of covering up certain essential body parts of those women who were daring enough to bathe publicly. Since then, there have been several changing styles and functions of the female bathing suit. It is indeed amazing to know that so much has been achieved in the swim wear with such scant material.
The first known use of a bathing costume was in Greece during 350 B.C. The fourth century mosaic wall was discovered depicting girls dressed in what resembles the modern-day bikinis. But, swim wear went out of fashion after the fall of the Roman Empire when water sports were no longer encouraged and the prudish Europeans regarded the sea more as a source of physical therapy than recreation.

Spas where men and women together engaged in public bathing began in France and England during the 18th century. The typical swim was nothing more than a brief symbolic dip in the water with ladies on one side of the beach and men on the other.

The earliest bathing suit was an old smock more in the nature of a bathing gown. Thus these suits were far from comfortable and ladies started sewing lead weights into the hem of the bathing gown to prevent any indecent exposure.

The early 1800's were presumably the starting point of a revolution in swim wear when Americans openly and publicly flocked to the beaches for seaside sports and recreation.

When public swimming, sun bathing and water sports became increasingly popular, the time was ripe for change in women's swim wear. The necessity arose for a specially designed swim wear that not only protected one’s modesty but also convenient enough to engage in swimming and sports activities.

By the end of the 19th century, swimming had come to be recognized as an acceptable form of water activity and as well as an intercollegiate and Olympic sport. By the 1880's the women’s swim wear was introduced, consisting of a blouse and trousers in one piece. There was also a separate skirt that extended below the knee with buttons at the waist to conceal the figure.

Then we had the swimsuits that started gradually exposing more and more skin. The beginning of the twentieth century signaled a bold era in swim wear for women. After that swimsuits began the trend of becoming more transparent and briefer. This was followed by a bikini or two-piece women's swimwear consisting of two separate items - one covering the breasts and another covering the groin or the entire buttocks region. The rest of the torso was left uncovered.

As the women's swim wears witnessed a gradual evolutionary process, men's swim wear also underwent many changes over time. From the beginning men’s swim wear was distinctly different from the female's suit, with pronounced characteristics of boxiness and solidity contrasted with the exaggerated curves of the women’s wear.

Though men were beginning to look sexier, there was still some controversy regarding baring the chest. However, men continued to fight for their right to expose their chest and by the early 1933, we had a convertible-style suit that allowed the top to be removed.

With women's suits becoming more and more daring and flamboyant during the 1950's and beyond, the male bathing costume saw an explosion of color patterns and fancy artwork.
